UK Emergency Alert System - test this Sunday

20/4/2023

A new system has been launched which has the capability to send an alert directly to mobile  phones, where this is risk to life.

This system will be tested on Sunday 23 April at 3pm when a message will be sent to all our mobile phones, accompanied by a vibration and a loud siren sound which will continue for 10 seconds, even if the phone is on silent.

No personal information has been obtained or used to enable this, mobile broadcasting technology can deliver mass communication to a particular area, with guidance on the action required in response to it.  It is intended to be used only very rarely in the future, and has already been used in other countries with great success where there was a threat to life during a fire, flood or extreme weather for example.

You do not need to respond or do anything when you receive this message on Sunday, it is a test.

It is recognised that there may be the need to opt-out of the alert system, for those in vulnerable groups especially domestic violence, and video guidance can be found here on how to do this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2MBcHwmiy8

An English language Easy Read leaflet provides further, visual information and there are resources available in other languages for you to signpost to: https://vcsep.org.uk/resources/emergency-alerts-system

If you have any questions, further information can be found here  https://www.gov.uk/alerts and FAQs have been pulled together here Frequently asked questions about Emergency Alerts (publishing.service.gov.uk)

Local people asked to help with local elections

17/4/2023

Warwick District Council is appealing to local people to step forward to fill a number of paid roles to support the upcoming local elections.

District, Town, and Parish Elections are taking place on Thursday 4 May, and the Council’s elections team is in urgent need of staff to supervise polling stations and also to assist with the count, which will take place at Stoneleigh Park on Friday 5 May.

The roles, which include Presiding Officers, Poll Clerks and Count Clerks, are available to anyone over 18 years, subject to proof of ID, with rates of pay from £170.29 for a Poll Clerk to £261.39 for a Presiding Officer. Those applying to work at a Polling Station will need to be available from 6.30am to 10.30pm on 4 May, and the count will be taking place on Friday 5 May.

Chris Elliott, Returning Officer for Warwick District, said:
“Running an election is a mammoth undertaking for a small team of people. By offering your support, you will not only be playing a vital role in the smooth running of our polling stations and count but also helping to ensure that the democratic process for our area is carried out quickly and efficiently.”

Full online training will be available for those applying for Presiding Officer and Poll Clerk roles.
